Modified to glow

Some microorganisms have been transformed through genetic modification and now carry specific genes that produce certain molecules that give these organisms a new color. Some of those might be pigments from other organisms, such as in the case of the yeast strains from Boeke’s lab. Other strains might contain the fluorescent proteins, which will emit bright light only when excited with light of specific wavelengths. These fluorescent proteins are used in a wide range of research projects, to determine the functioning of genes and proteins inside cells and organisms.

Promijenjeni da svijetle

Neki mikroorganizmi su promijenjeni pomoću genetskih tehnika i sada nose specifične gene koji proizvode odredene obojene molekule i na taj način daju dodatnu boju mikroorganizmima. Neke od tih boja/pigmenata potječu iz drugih organizama, kao što je slučaj sa sojevima kvasca iz Boekeovog laboratorija. Neki drugi sojevi pak sadrže fluorescentne proteine, koji emitiraju svjetlost samo ako su pobuđeni svjetlom određene valne duljine. Takvi fluorescentni proteini koriste se u mnogim znastvenim projektima, kako bi nam pomogli da utvrdimo funkciju gena i proteina u staniciama i organizmima.
